                                                             The Department of Political Science has been functioning meritoriously from 1981 and is a full-fledged Under-Graduate Department in the College. After its prolonged existence as a complementary course in an institution annexed to the college, its inception as a UG Department of Political Science became a reality with the tireless efforts and far-sighted vision of the Prof. O. M. Mathew, the first HOD of the department.The Department has been, through the years, maintaining excellent academic results by winning University ranks/positions over the last several years and is evident from the consistency in securing positions such as second rank for the last three years (2016, 2018, and 2019) and fourth and third positions in 2017 and 2019 and also by achieving many of the top positions in CBCSS BA Degree Political Science examinations of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The department has already conducted a UGC funded course titled ‘Foundation Course on Human Rights Education’, during 2014-19, with an intention of promoting human rights which entailed widespread participation from the student’s community. We have the strong support of retired staff and an Alumni comprising many social and Political figures including former MLA Sri. Mons Joseph who held a remarkable position in Kerala Politics. The department in enriched with team of dedicated teachers having good academic excellence.

                                                   After completion of UG from here, many of our students are pursuing their higher education in various institutions under many of the esteemed Universities in India and abroad. After clearing National Eligibility Tests some of them are pursuing research in various Universities. Many of them are working under public and private sectors.

                                                                    For making the classroom learning more effective we started ICT enabled classes by introducing smart classroom in the year 2020. Apart from curricular and extracurricular activities, the department also gives importance to co-curricular activities including sports events and many of the students from the department have secured prizes in the Inter-Collegiate and Inter-University, National and International level competitions.  Our students, Mr.Netto Benny and Mr.Jestin George brought fame to the department by having been selected to Santhosh Trophy team Kerala. Mr. Joshua Manoj of the department also made us proud participating in Republic day Parade held at New Delhi in 2018 representing the NCC unit of the college. Being the Volunteers of NSS and NCC many of the students from the department have rendered their services to the Nation by participating Interstate Youth Exchange programme and Tal Sanik Campas well as National integration Camps held respectively at Himachal Pradesh, New Delhi and Assam.

                                                      Department is also having a Students’ association and is to promote collaboration among the undergraduate students of Political Science beyond classroom learning. It is a forum for students to express themselves by participating in activities like debates, lectures, inviting speakers to get an expert opinion on the current socio-political issues of national and international importance, displaying and improving their organizational skills by way of organizing programmes and educational-cum-recreational excursions, having panel discussions, quizzes and so on. All these activities give the young learners an exposure to express themselves in multifaceted ways which might not be possible in formal class-room learning process, but which nevertheless are important. As a part of extracurricular activities, the department organised several lectures on contemporary socio-political issues by inviting dignitaries in the areas concerned. Since the last five years, department has been conducting a Political fest titled Kautuka at the end of every academic year and participating students inside and outside the college aiming to promote their artistic and cultural talents.It is a matter of pride that many of our studentswonremarkable achievements especially in debate and elocution competitions held at University level and various Colleges inside Kerala.

                                                       In order to promote the awareness of legal culture and justice system among Higher Secondary Schools at Kottayam, the department organised Legal Awareness Campaign for HSS Students employing some selected students from the department.  Some our students were served as Special duty officers on deputation for special occasions like Sabarimala pilgrim Season under District Police Office Kottayam.  With an intention of improving the reading and writing skills as well as to provide possible opportunities to improve their creative and imaginary skills,the students of Political Science department crafted and published a magazine in the year 2020.

                                                         For making the working of democracy and its institutions an experiential reality,the department conducts field trips  every year to places of political importance like Legislative assembly, Vidhan Sabha, participates the selected candidates in National Youth Parliament and send them regularly for conducting electoralsurveys prior to every legislative and Parliamentary elections, in association with the institute of Parliamentary Affairs, Kerala.
