The Department of Political Science has been functioning meritoriously from 1981 and is a full – fledged Under-Graduate Department. The inception of the Department of Political Science became a reality with the tireless efforts and far – sighted vision of Prof. O.M. Mathew (Presently working as chairman, Vivekananda Chair, M.G. University, Kottayam). Through the years, the Department was enriched by the remarkable services of Late Prof. P.M. Antony, Late Prof. Zachariahs V. Thalakulam, Dr. Molly Varghese, Prof. P.A. Kochuthresia (Currently a member of state Public service Commission), Prof, M.V. Varkey and Prof. Joshua George (formerly chairman, Board of studies in Politics, M.G. University).
The Department has been, through the years, maintaining good academic results. It is a matter of pride for the Department, having secured University ranks over the years. In the year 2005 it was II rank of Ms. Jayasree Ravindran, then in the very next year (2006) the Department had two ranks with Ms. Advaita R Prasad and Ms. Lijitha T Thampi securing I and II ranks respectively. In the year 2007, Ms. Aparna C got the III rank. The year 2009 added new plume of glory to the Department through Ms. Jeethu Elza Cherian Chacko, having secured I rank in the B.A. Degree Examinations of Mahatma Gandhi University. The Department also gives importance to co-curricular activities and many of the students from the Department have secured prizes in the Inter-Collegiate and Inter-University competitions. Strong alumni with many outstanding personalities in the public realm also add to the glory of the Department. Sri. Mons Joseph, Former Minister for Public Works, is an illustrious alumnus of the Department.
The Department has a good library of its own. The Department has instituted four endowments from which the annual interest is disbursed to students as scholarships on merit basis. The Department is also the registered office of the Political Science Association of Kerala, an interest group aimed to promote the study of Political Science at the Higher Secondary and College / University level.
